Everyone At Some Point Or Another Has Been Passed Over.

Everyone at some point or another has been passed over. It might have been a younger sibling getting the last piece of pie or someone less experienced getting a pay raise or promotion. Whatever it may have been everyone has the possibility to become an Iago from Othello by William Shakespeare. The difference is Iago has certain traits that makes him the villain. Iago possesses a need for justice that reveals his true character: bitter/hateful, deceptive, and manipulative. His commitment to himself and his sense of justice reveals the theme: if bitterness is left uncheck it can evolve into a vengeful perspective on life. In the beginning of the play, the reader can sympathize with Iago’s need for justice. The reader learns that he has†¦show more content†¦Iago’s indignation arises from knowing that someone with no experience received the position. The bitterness is left unchecked and quickly turns into hate. Instead of going to Othello, he whined and pined over it and eventually he says, â€Å"...I hate the Moor† (1.3.369). His hatred toward Othello drives him to become deceptive and manipulative. Iago advises Cassio: â€Å"confess yourself freely to her; importune her to help you put you in your place again† (2.3.282-284). Although this seems to be sound advice, Iago plans to deceive Othello by leading him to believe that Cassio and Desdemona are in love. In an aside, Iago says, â€Å"I’ll pour this pestilence into his ear, / ...So I will turn her virtue into pitch, / And out of her own goodness make the net / That shall enmesh them all† (2.3.316,320-322). Through deception Iago aspires to bring Othello and Cassio to their knees and achieve the position he so desired. With the first step of his plan complete, Iago now has to manipulate Othello into action. In an aside Iago sneers, â€Å"O, you are well tuned now! / But I’ll set down the pegs that make this music† (2.1.194-195). Essentially, Iago i s going to manipulate Othello in such a way that Othello becomes a puppet acting based on Iago’s wishes. In the play Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare, Mark Antony is depicted as a better leader than Brutus, due to his cunning use of rhetoric when addressing the plebeians after Caesar’s death. This essay will be divided into two sections to explore the ways in which Antony is depicted as better leader. The First section will contextualise the extracts used for analysis, and compare Brutus’s pedestrian speech with Mark Antony’s impressive oratory. This will be done by defining what rhetoric is, and how it is used by Antony to win over the plebeians in comparison with Brutus. The second section will use examples taken from Machiavelli’s The Prince, in order to establish that Mark Antony is depicted as a better leader. Now that the extracts have been contextualised, the definition of rhetorical will be explored as this is what Antony uses which portrays him as a superior leader. Rhetoric is the ability to persuade an audience using artful speeches or an enthralling writing style (Auger 262). It was a vital part of study during the Early Renaissance time in Europe, being included in the syllabus at universities which Shakespeare made use of (Auger 262). According to Auger, Brutus presents an inadequate speech to the plebeians in Act 3 of the play, while Antony’s speech is more alluring (262). The following sections will analyse the ways that Antony persuades the plebeians by the use of rhetoric, portraying him as a better leader than Brutus. Before focusing on the actual speech, it is important to note how Brutus addresses the plebeians as he addresses them from the pulpit during the entire speech. The pulpit is a platform which elevates Brutus from the plebeians, placing him in a position of authority. The novel, Death Be Not Proud, by John Gunther, is the story of the struggle of a child to stay alive. Johnny Gunther Jr. ’s constant hope got him out of bed every morning with a positive attitude. He always obeyed the doctors’ wishes and followed their instructions to a  «T » because he wanted so desparatly to get well. Although he realized that eventually his life would end, he still never gave up the hope that perhaps he could outsmart his fate to die, if just to steal a few extra hours. Each day, until his last, the determination Johnny had to get well, live a normal life, and even maintain his schoolwork was phenominal. After being away from school for sixteen months, being tested constantly by doctors, and having a rapidly deteriorationg brain, Johnny still managed to graduate with his class and be accepted into Harvard. Throughout his illness, Johnny always had an unwavering will to survive, to awake the next morning and find that he was well, that he had only been dreaming the nightmare of his illness. When Johnny awoke each morning however, he felt the bandage on his head and realized that he was living this horrific nightmare. But even through this tremendous disappointment, Johnny kept fighting, determined to recuperate. Johnny should be admired for not giving up under the intense emotional burden of knowing that each breath may be his last. Johnny’s story is one that will be remembered because of the courage he had. If he had had any fears of death, they were unknown because of his consideration for others and not wanting to burden others with his troubles. One can only imagine what it must have been like to lie awake at night alone in a hospital room, wondering what it is like to die and to awaken the next morning, shed all questions and fears of the night before, and cheerfully greet those around you. Johnny’s inner struggle and turmoil was something that no one knows nor will ever know. Throughout his many medical treatments and moments of pain, Johnny was always strong and brave. He always smiled and hung in there fighting. Even with his final unconcious breath, there was still animation in him, he was still determined to live. Thankfully he died with a smile on his lips, without pain, with dignity, and with courage and strength to face the next world he would enter. Johnny’s gallant fight for life, against the most hopeless odds, should convey a message to anyone who has ever been ill. Through a child’s hope, determination and courage when about to die, a for of a hero is made. Johnny’s manner in facing the awful reality of dying is something that is looked up to by all and we should all strive to achieve this manner. For example, the slaughtering of the innocent cat as a test of willpower (Mishima 61) serves as a crucial point in that novel that offers a revelation to Noboru: â€Å"I can do anything, no matter how awful. † A realization such as this leads into bigger events in the novel such as the luring of Ryuji into his doom (Mishima 169). In doing so Noboru grows heartless, savage, and reconfirms his indifference towards the world. Psychology in this novel is possibly the biggest factor revolving around character development in The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea. From Ryuji’s transformation from a sailor to a father in the Summer and Winter parts of the novel to Fusako being a single mother turned married wife, it’s no doubt that Noboru changed as well. In the premise of the novel, Noboru is introduced as a thirteen-year-old boy living under a roof supported by his mother who owns a luxury boutique store. With his father passing away five years ago, Noboru has grown up only under his mother’s influence (Mishima 8). Lacking the male figure that usually guides the boy, the struggle for â€Å"happiness† in Noboru has led to his acceptance of objectivity in place of it. With no father figure present during his childhood, Mishima presents this as the foundation for Noboru’s ulterior motives later on in the plot. The deficiency of family dynamics is stark within this novel. With no authority being put upon Noboru, it allows him to be irrational and wild. However, since he is a self-proclaimed genius, his freedom is spent in silence that later transitions into his ulterior motives. With the introduction of Second Mate Ryuji Tsukazaki into the life of the Kuroda family, it catalyzes character development. Fusako, Noboru’s mother, begins to rekindle her love life and later on marries Ryuji. Noboru on the other hand, idealizes Tsukazaki as liberal, masculine, disciplined, and without weak effeminate characteristics. With praise to Ryuji as his new â€Å"male figure†, it psychologically develops a sense of attachment and appreciation for him. Such instances occurred when Ryuji came back from his duties at sea and brought back a present for Noboru. Typically, the boy would be indifferent towards such a generous act given his nature but he responded in a sense of excitement (Mishima 102). With emotions conflicting inside Noboru, it develops a feeling of acceptance and reformats the family dynamics within the Kuroda household (Mishima 144). Ryuji, however, begins to grow soft due to newly being a father. This course of action labels him as a â€Å"fallen hero† among Noboru and his gang. With a brutal discussion about fathers such as â€Å"fathers are evil itself, laden with everything ugly in Man†, it presents the idea of â€Å"making Ryuji a hero again (Mishima 136). † A meeting like this with the cult of objectionists alters Noboru’s mentality further on into the novel. With a final betrayal from Ryuji due to the sailor acting in a fatherly manner, Noboru confirms that his once praised hero is hopeless (Mishima 158). This last test of redemption that fails leads to the disappointment in Noboru, following up with the chief’s plan to make Ryuji a hero again. The psychological factors at play constantly reshape within Noboru. With each â€Å"betrayal† from Ryuji, Noboru mentally notes them and his anger builds up within. When it finally reaches a maximum limit, Noboru’s objectionist philosophy is put into full initiative. The life of the once heroic sailor is ended with an ironic finale (Mishima 181). In a gist, Noboru Kuroda’s transformation throughout the novel has simply been abominable. From the premise of innocence to the macabre product of what he has become, the thirteen-year-old boy could not be blamed for his actions. Through being put in the onset of maturity while struggling with his social conventions as well as the ongoing psychological factors regarding his deficiency in family dynamics; the corruption of Noboru in his coming of age is well described by Mishima in his novel. Yukio’s usage of death as being â€Å"perfect† (Mishima 61) provides an eerie atmosphere for the reader as his central character deals with the ire provided by his life.
